Johnstown, PA Dog & pet photographer | Mary

In the heart of Johnstown, PA, a story unfolded that will resonate deeply with every pet owner.  This tale is about Mary, a majestic brown border collie, and her hooman family, who wished to document her spirit through dog photography.

As a dedicated dog photographer, I've had the privilege of meeting many pets, and like every single one, Mary's story touched my heart uniquely.  Preparing to leave their long-time home, her family wanted to capture lasting memories of their beloved dog.  This task was not just about pet photography; it was about capturing Mary's spirit as this chapter closed and another one opened.

Mary had started to slow down in her golden years, although just a bit.  Though her spirit remained vibrant, her family wanted to preserve her current state — full of grace and love.  As a photographer specializing in these pup portraits, creating these photographs was an honor and a profound responsibility.

Mary’s favorite spot on the steps.

Our session began at Mary's favorite spot: the inside stairs of her home.  This was her perch, where she watched the world with a keen border collie gaze, a vigilant guardian of her household.  The light streaming through the doorway highlighted Mary's glossy coat and deep, expressive eyes.  Each photograph I took captured more than her physical beauty; it captured her soul and the essence of her bond with her family as they prompted Mary with questions filled with her favorite words.

The session was playful in the dining room, her usual spot during family meals.  Lying on the floor, I captured her perspective, and she regarded me with bewilderment and amusement.  Her expressions, blending curiosity and affection, perfectly captured her unique personality.  Looking at these photographs, I can almost hear her saying, "Why are you down here with me...and why isn't there any food on a plate!?"

The emotional depth of our session deepened by the Christmas tree in the living room.  Mary, ever so cooperative and loving, followed my guidance, motivated by her favorite treats.  But it wasn't just about posing; it became about connection.  Mary cuddled into me, and her family watched, their tears a mix of joy and nostalgia, a testament to the special place she held in their hearts.  It was a poignant reminder of the irreplaceable gifts our pets bring into our lives.

The family portraits on the front steps celebrated love and companionship for their Christmas Cards.  Mary, basking in her family's affection, occasionally shifted her gaze to the street, ever alert.  Her focused demeanor, typical of border collies, symbolized her protective and loving nature.  Everyone from people driving down the road to the occasional walker on the sidewalk learned just how intense the laser-focused border collie stare is.  Watching Mary reminded me of my dog, Breezie, who passed away in 2019 at 17.

As we neared the end of our session, Mary led us to her side porch, another favorite spot for observing the world.  Her intense, curious looks were captivating, each expression telling a story of curiosity and wisdom.  Capturing these moments was both a privilege and a joy.

When it was time to conclude, I couldn't bring myself to say goodbye.  I stayed, sharing a few more moments with Mary, offering her treats and affection.  This experience underscored the profound connections we share with our pets.  Each dog I photograph brings a unique story and an unspoken bond with their humans.  I feel very fortunate that I can give people these memories.
